4-Hour Fall Protection - Competent Person Course Description (Construction)
The Fall Protection competent person course is designed to meet the training requirements of OSHA 29 CFR Subpart M Fall Protection. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.503 training requirements will be met as well as knowledge of other fall protection requirements found throughout OSHA 29 CFR Construction regulations and ANSI standards for fall protection equipment. This course would be beneficial for anyone supervising or working at heights on construction sites. This course is designed specifically to provide the advanced knowledge required of a competent person.
The competent person is deemed by the employer and shall be capable of inspection, identifying hazards and given the authority to stop work and make corrective actions.
This course includes the content outlined below, hands on activities and a knowledge assessment. All participants who complete this course and the required exam will receive a course completion certificate. It is recommended that a refresher course be taken every three (3) years.
Students completing this course will be able to:
· Identify the nature of fall hazards in the work area;
· Understand correct procedures for erecting, maintaining, disassembling, and inspecting the fall protection systems to be used;
· Understand the use and operation of guardrail systems, personal fall arrest systems, safety net systems, warning line systems, safety monitoring systems, controlled access zones, and other protection to be used;
· Understand the role of each employee in the safety monitoring system when this system is used;
· Identify the limitations on the use of mechanical equipment during the performance of roofing work on low-sloped roofs;
· Identify the correct procedures for the handling and storage of equipment and materials and the erection of overhead protection;
· Understand the role of employees in fall protection plans including the duties of a competent person
· Identify hazards associated with different types of fall protection systems
· Demonstrate correct usage and inspection of personal fall arrest equipment including correct fitting of harnesses, lanyards, self- retractable lifelines, and knowledge of proper anchorage points
