Description

Procurement is the process by which contractors negotiate, select and contract for the goods and services that will be used to build a project. This class explains the steps that are involved in the construction procurement process. Because procurement touches virtually every aspect of a construction organization, it is essential that all employees have a good understanding of the process. Students will learn about the procurement life cycle and become familiar with essential procurement tools including scope of work, subcontracts, purchase orders, professional service agreements, short-form subcontracts and field purchase orders. 

Following this course participants will be able to:

  • Create a project plan using the most favorable combination of cost, schedule and subcontractor qualifications. analyze and strategically select the most best combination of goods and services for a given construction project
  • Qualify subcontractors based on pricing, scope of work, bonding capacity, safety requirements and schedule. 
  • Write a detailed scope of work, including list of assumptions, schedule, manpower issues, insurance requirements, bonding capacity and unit pricing

What you can expect to learn as a:

  • General Contractor: understand the entire process and why it is important
  • Specialty Contractor: understand the GC point of view and why certain items are needed/requested. Understand how the Sub knowledge of certain items will affect the GC final decision making.
  • Supplier: understand the GC point of view and why certain items are needed/requested. Understand how the Sub knowledge of certain items will affect the GC final decision making.
  • Industry Professional: understand the GC point of view and why certain items are needed/requested. Understand how the Sub knowledge of certain items will affect the GC final decision making.
  • Owner/Developer: understand the Construction process and how late decisions might affect the entire schedule 
  • Architect/Engineer: understand the Construction process and how late decisions might affect the entire schedule 

This class provides a broad overview of the topic and is best suited for new hires and those new to the industry to help bridge the gap between theory and job site reality.
